Dear Foreign Secretary,
According to the latest reports, 16 Palestinians were killed and more than 1,400 wounded by Israeli troops in the Land Day demonstrations at the Gaze border fence. A video shows one young man being shot in the back as he runs away from the fence. 20 are in critical condition. Another 14 Palestinians were injured by rubber coated bullets in Ramallah in the West Bank. By any reasonable consideration, the Israeli army’s action was a wilfully brutal response to a democratic, peaceful protest against the illegal occupation and settlement project that has lasted 51 years, and the illegal siege of Gaza that has lasted 11 years.
We call on you, as Foreign Secretary, to condemn Israel’s action and for the Israeli army to be brought to book for shooting deliberately at unarmed civilians. We also urge you to work to get the United Nations Security Council to reconvene and support the Secretary General’s call for an investigation into the deadly clashes. There will be more demonstrations as Nakba Day approaches. Israel must not be allowed to repeat the Land Day killings.
According to UN reports Gaza is on the edge of a humanitarian crisis – not one caused by nature, but by the deliberate actions of the state of Israel to punish the civilian population of Gaza.
Yesterday’s demonstrations commemorated the day in 1976 when six unarmed Palestinian citizens of Israel were killed, and 100 wounded, protesting the seizure of their land in the Galilee to make way for building Israeli communities – explicitly to “Judaise the Galilee”. On May 15 it will be 70 years since the Nakba – the catastrophe when over 700,000 Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their own land.
It is time for the British Government to fulfil its historic obligations and lead pressure to force the Israeli government to come into compliance with international law by ending the military occupation of Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Yours sincerely,
signatory of Jews for Justice for Palestinians.
