Netanyahu makes the most of Iranian anti-Israel rhetoric

Declarations of deadly intent towards, and from, each other constitutes the public relationship of Iran and Israel. In this latest round, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Naqdi is reported by Israeli TV (so far no other news publication has bothered to translate it) to have said yet again that Israel will disappear from the map though whether through its own inherent instability or military force is unclear. Nonetheless PM Netanyahu has lapped it up eagerly as proof that the nuclear talks with Iran should not be happening. Self-publicising Shmuley Boteach uses the speech to liken those in talks with Iran to Chamberlain appeasing Hitler, momentarily forgetting that the mouthy Brig. Gen runs a volunteer militia, not a country. And is pro-Palestinian Saudi Arabia, bombing Iranian allies in Yemen, now Israel’s friend?

US turns against Bibi for ‘playing us for fools’

This time Netanyahu has gone too far. He has accepted an invitation to address the US Congress on the dangers Iran poses (as if they don’t know) – and done so without informing the White House. This act of disrespect has infuriated even the right-wing American media and again embarrassed Israelis by another clumsy act of self-publicity.

Rouhani as the new Hitler

President Obama is the new Chamberlain and President Rouhani the new Hitler: America’s political commentators are serving their readers badly when they can only interpret today’s relationship with Iran by using analogies from Europe’s attempt to delay war against fascist Germany in 1938. The sacrifice of Czechoslovakia to Hitler has no analogy to the interim deal in Geneva – except for those who believe Israel has been sacrificed.

Jews for peace with Iran

Last month, 113 American Jews holding office in synagogues signed a public statement calling on the American and Iranians to show repentance for past hostilities and to take steps towards mutual welcome, peace and justice. The public atmosphere into which this statement is delivered is described by M.J.Rosenberg – a bellicosity that is almost entirely being whipped up by AIPAC and their servile Congressmen – and which tramples on American interests. A survey by the American Jewish Committee shows Jewish support for a strike against Iran has fallen to just over half.

Bibi belligerence repels US

The political gap between the US and Israel have been made manifest by Netanyahu’s policies of utmost belligerence towards Iran and utmost indifference towards Palestinian rights and John Kerry’s public questioning of Israel’s seriousness about making peace with Palestinians. Not at all surprising – but it is unusual for those differences to be spoken about and acted on in public. Netanyahu is beside himself.
