Canada’s Green leader defies party vote for BDS

Here Yves Engler speculates in Palestine Chronicle about whether Canada’s Green Party leader has been influenced by Christian Zionism. He doesn’t know but does give us an interesting piece about the power of Christian Zionism. Anglicans were the first to promulgate despatching Jews to Palestine.

JStreet joins virulent attack on Presbyterian guide to zionism

The organization of Presbyterian churches in the US, the PCUSA, has produced a study guide on zionism for all its congregants, and others. (It is not available to download but reviews praise its breadth of information). Predictably it has been attacked by the Simon Wiesenthal Center and other Israel lobby groups; more surprisingly JStreet has joined in the attack – but since JStreet set out to rival AIPAC in its Congressional influence its status as a progressive group has become more and more dubious. Christian critics of Christian Zionism support the pamphlet.

God’s promise on Israel: not a place but the reign of peace and justice

The Church of Scotland played a leading role in designating Palestine as the Biblical land of Israel to which Jews must return for prophecies to be realised. It was one of its ministers who made the claim that Palestine was ‘a land without people for a people without land’ . Over 180 years after that kickstart to Christian Zionism, the Church of Scotland publishes a report – The Inheritance of Abraham? – throwing out the literal reading of ‘the land of Israel’ and putting forward its view of how Christians should regard the treatment of Palestinians by the Israeli state. UPDATE: Rebuke from Scottish Council of Jewish Communities.

Israel’s war on Satan’s instrument – the Christmas tree

In his comments on Netanyahu’s Christmas message Ali Abunimah adds his voice to the reports on the hostility of ‘the Jewish state’ to any manifestations of Christianity (except Zionist evangelicals). Bizarrely, the (pagan, capitalist) Christmas tree has earned the particular ire of Jewish isolationists (perhaps because Arab Christians are the best educated group in Israel – see item 2); maybe why Netanyahu’s son is snuggling into one (see pic). The Palestinian embrace of Christmas celebrations and the tree gives the lie to propaganda about universal Islamic anti-western, anti-Christian fundamentalism.

Israeli right welcomes support of American anti-semitic ‘lunatic’

The notorious Glenn Beck, sacked from Fox Broadcasting for being too prejudiced for even their biassed broadcasts, has been welcomed to Israel to preach his support for the ‘Jewish state’. A Haaretz editorial asks why the Israeli right is now in alliance with American Christian Zionists and what it says about their fears and priorities
