All energy this week has gone into the Jewish Boat to Gaza. The boat set off towards Gaza last Sunday as we reported in last week’s website mailing. Since then many people’s time was fully taken up with keeping in touch with the boat and getting news out of its progress and its boarding [‘peaceful, according to the IDF!], securing the release of all its passengers and crew, placing articles and interviews, updating the Jewish Boat to Gaza website – and much else beside. Heartiest congratulations to all those on the boat, who were bravely in the frontline, but also to those behind the scenes who did so much to make the project a resounding success. You might not have known that from the UK media who were often churlish about reporting it; but elsewhere, beginning with Israel, interest was intense and widespread. The latest news is that the Jewish boat to Gaza is on its way! See the Jewish Boat to Gaza website – http://jewishboattogaza.org/ – to keep abreast of developments.
Big news of the week was the delivery of two separate reports to the United Nations Human Rights Council about the situation in Gaza, one dealing with the follow-up to the Goldstone Report, the other about the assault on the Gaza flotilla at the end of May. We also carried postings exposing the failure of the Israeli government to come clean on the economic realities of Gaza today; detailing Israeli government support for the settlement enterprise as a whole; on the drift towards fascism represented by the Im Tirtzu organisation; the weaknesses of Obama’s speech to the General Assembly, on Iran-Israel and more. No terrible events this week, at least not ones that have come to our attention, but a range of interesting news items and reflections on issues of importance: Why is it so difficult to criticise Israel in the US? Does Chris Patten’s call for a bolder EU approach herald a shift in government policy? Why are sections of the Israeli right calling for a one-state solution? Is Avrum Burg’s call for a new party dedicated to radical equality between Palestinian and Israeli citizens of Israel a goer? Is it time to apply the words apartheid or fascism? Plus: the Jewish boat to Gaza, Tom Segev reviewing Benny Morris on 1948, and more. For a guide to this week’s postings click on the heading above.
We are dismayed that our friend and colleague Glyn Secker, has been suspended from membership of the Labour Party without being told of any specific allegations against him. Glyn is an Executive Committee member of Jews for Justice for Palestinians, was captain of the Jewish Boat to Gaza in 2009, and is Secretary of Jewish […]
From EU and British engagement in MidEast wars – while diplomatically remaining detached – through the US attempt to outlaw support for BDS and the women of Al Aqsa to the scary rally for an ailing Israeli PM.
Page last updated 28 Jun 2015 Introduction This page is really a marker, a reminder that so much of solidarity work abroad consists of support for campaigns organised by both Palestinians and Israelis on the ground. As we say on the About page, WE SUPPORT many Israeli and Palestinian peace and human-rights organisations morally and […]
For what was intended as a mass public (Jews and non-Jews) display of ‘zero tolerance about antisemitism’ Sunday’s rally drew a paltry crowd. Despite being promoted by the Board of Deputies, their speakers were booed. It was organised by the ‘grassroots’ Campaign Against Antisemitism whose representative is Jonathan Sacerdoti who goes to great lengths to censor information about himself and his current work as Director of the Institute for Middle Eastern Democracy.
Dr. Eyad el-Sarraj, who became a refugee in Gaza and was never allowed back home, became internationally renowned for his understanding of the psychiatric wounds inflicted on the people of Gaza by the Israeli bombings, the siege, the fear, the humiliation. He himself was imprisoned and tortured by the PA. He was awarded the Martin Ennals award for Human Rights Defenders in 1998 and the Olof Palme Prize in 2010.
The ship Estelle was carrying a cargo of people and humanitarian aid to the people of the besieged Gaza strip when it was seized by the IDF and taken to Ashdod where people and cargo were impounded. Contrary to claims by IDF spokesmen violence was used. There is no legal reason why unarmed people should not be free to visit independent Gaza.
