The Saoirse from Ireland and Tahrir with representatives from Canada, the U.S., Australia, and Palestine were on their way to Gaza carrying 27 passengers, medical supplies and letters of support until intercepted by the Israeli navy on Friday. 1) Press release from In Gaza, 2) BBC news 3) JfJfP: Israeli action ‘not in our name’
The French ship Dignité left Greek waters on Saturday night carrying 10 people and the hopes of the whole Stay Human flotilla. 1st, JfJfP holds fast with siege-breakers’ aims; then the press release about Dignité, followed by a news report from Amira Hass who is on the boat and a 3rd piece reports that the Juliano expects to leave for Egypt and Gaza soon
While Israeli and Greek authorities do all they can to stop the flotilla sailing, the Dignite al Karama gets away, civil protests at the embassies in Athens increase, and hundreds plan to arrive by air in Israel for the ‘Welcome to Palestine’ week (see post below)
The Stay Human flotilla to Gaza has either set sail or is about to depending on when you read this. Here there is an article about the threats to its departure, a piece from flotilla veterans of the Free Gaza movement which cites a Palestinian civil society petition, and the petition itself with its many signatories at the end of this post
There are three articles in this posting:
1. from Bilbao, the ship Gernika sails in the Rumbo a Gaza to join the flotilla;
2, from the US, ‘I am one of a growing number of young American Jews who are determined to shake off an assumed – and largely imposed – association with Israel’; and
3, the 50 civilians on Canada’s Tahrir practise to overcome their fear of Israeli attack
Author Alice Walker talks with Ali Abunimah about her impending passage on the ‘Stay Human’ flotilla and the echoes of the US’s Freedom Riders – and presidential indifference. Below, we publish the letter of American passengers on the ship Audacity of Hope, named in reference to Obama’s own 2006 book
A request for people to contact the FCO and their MPs to ensure the safety and speedy release of the passengers and crew of the Irene.
