Anger from EU leaders after Israel fires ‘warning shot’ at diplomats

Israel claimed the diplomats had entered an unauthorised area in the occupied West Bank

Alex MacDonald reports in Middle Est Eye on 21 May 2025:

European Union leaders have expressed their outrage after Israeli soldiers fired “warning shots” at EU diplomats in the occupied West Bank.

Footage released by the Palestinian Authority on social media showed members of the delegation running for cover, while Israeli soldiers aimed at the cameraman.  The PA said the Israeli army opened “heavy fire” from inside the Jenin refugee camp in order to “intimidate” the diplomatic delegation, who were touring the camp to monitor conditions.

Israel’s foreign ministry said in a statement on social media that the soldiers had fired “warning shots” to scare the group away after they “entered an area where they were not authorised to be”.

The incident comes a day after the EU said it would review its political and economic agreement with Israel in light of the ongoing assault on the Gaza Strip.  The attack on the delegations provoked a slew of condemnations from European leaders.
