This week, June 1st-7th. the deterioration of US-Israel relations was a feature of several publications, including
Most no longer believe Netanyahu wants peace Obama tells Israelis
and Israel’s international isolation.
But the evidence of the ‘No to a Palestinian state’ has been ignored:
No No No – Ministers speak on Palestinian state
A compilation by the (American) Foundation for Middle East Peace of the opposition to a Palestinian state by this government’s ministers – making a mockery of their claims to want a ‘two-state solution’.
Some assume this is a personality clash between President and Prime Minister. More likely is the difference between the US’s readiness to engage in diplomatic negotiations with Iran and Netanyahu’s insistence that Iran is, by its Islamic nature, an unmovable existential threat to Israel. Netanyahu’s view that his government alone has not been deceived by Iran’s willingness to negotiate has made Israel’s voice insignificant in the Geneva talks.
The Boycott, Divest, Sanctions (BDS) campaign in Europe and the US is causing increasing concern to the Israeli government. They respond with charges of ‘delegitimisation’ and antisemitism, never facing the issue of the illegality, and wrongness, of their occupation. The BDS campaign has been joined by the NUS executive committee,
NUS exec votes to support BDS
Settlements nurture anti-Zionism in many Jews
Although the CEO of Orange (telecoms) has insisted the decision to withdraw from its franchise with the Israeli franchise, Partner, is not political, nervy Israeli commentators, and others, have assumed it is.
Orange breaks its dangerous liaison with Israel
Cynicism has been the main response to the anointment of Tony Blair as the overseer of the NGO, the European council on Tolerance and Reconciliation, taking on a new role, this time based in Europe.
Blair is set to serve as Chair of the European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation (ECTR),
The emperor’s new clothes
The American/Israeli zealot Yehuda Glick is doing Israel (the diplomatic section) no favours with his campaign to allow Jews to pray on Haram Al-Sharif / Temple Mount. This is obviously not about praying, which can be, and is, done anywhere; it is about claiming that Jews in Israel / Palestine should have free rein / reign.
Right-wing dream for ‘Temple Mount’ meets rock of reality
The power of the ‘Israel lobby’ is a given for conspiracy theorists. However, it doesn’t explain why reputable institutions, like the University of Southampton, should cancel a conference questioning Israel’s legitimacy. It is likely the ‘Israel lobby’ went to work – which doesn’t explain why it succeeded. The conference was cancelled by the Vice-Chancellor on health and safety grounds. The more likely explanation is not the strength of the `Israel lobby’ but the fear of the anti-Israel lobby by the protest of many.
Panicky Israel lobby heaves up the barricades
The western mantra that no action should be taken against Israel’s illegal occupation because negotiations will solve it is, yet again, contradicted by Israeli leaders:
No No No – Ministers speak on Palestinian state
Germany is, as we know, the home of the drive to annihilate Jews. It is also now the home of many Muslims and highly alert to any manifestations of antisemitism. Today’s generation have created a culture where any whiff of antisemitism is not tolerated:
Jews are our brothers, Zionists are our enemies says German Muslims
Although the anxiety about antisemitism can lead to a refusal – sometimes justified – to distinguish between opposition to Israeli policies and antisemitism:
Anti-Zionist hate is tantamount to antisemitism German court rules
And more besides…
