Stop supermarkets profiting from the Occupation

(See below for PSC’s statement and materials available to help with campaigning)

High street supermarkets are profiting from Israel’s occupation of Palestine by selling produce from Israeli settlements.

Under international law, Israel’s settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are illegal. By selling settlement produce, supermarkets are complicit in their illegal activity and profiting from Palestinian suffering.

Act now to tell the CEOs of Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda to stop selling settlement produce in their stores.War on Want call.

You can send this call directly from the War on Want website:

Dear Chief Executives,

The Israeli Occupation of Palestine has created a humanitarian disaster. Palestinians are being subjected to human rights abuses daily and live in crushing poverty in refugee camps. According to the United Nations over 70% of Palestinians now live in poverty.

I am concerned that your supermarket is complicit in the Occupation by selling produce from Israeli settlements. Settlements are illegal under international law and the British government has called them “obstacles to peace”. By selling settlement produce, your supermarket is complicit in their illegality and making a killing from Palestinian suffering.

I urge you to end your sale of settlement produce immediately and check through your supply chain to ensure that your supermarket ends its complicity in human rights violations against Palestinians.

I look forward to receiving your response.

Thank you

Ban Israeli Settlement Goods

Dear Friend

In the 43rd year of Israel’s occupation of Palestine, the repression of its people is worse than ever.

This must end. The Palestinians have a right to live with dignity, free from occupation.
To coincide with the call for a Global Day of Action on 30 March 2010, made by the Palestinian Boycott National Committee, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign is pleased to launch a campaign in partnership with the TUC which aims to end the sale of settlement produce in Britain.

The British government has recognised that the settlements are illegal and an obstacle to peace. Yet produce from Palestine’s stolen land — fruits, herbs, beauty products, DIY tools — are being sold in our supermarkets and shops, helping to economically sustain the settlements and strengthening the occupation.

Take action now. We’ve produced a number of resources below to help kickstart the campaign – including:

Together, we can send a clear message that the international community is serious – Israel’s illegal occupation must end, and it must abide by international law.

In solidarity,

Hugh Lanning
