New report on academic freedom in Israel and Palestine

The University and College Union has just informed its branches and local associations of a new report prepared by Education International/Canadian Association of University Teachers on on the status of higher education staff in Israel and Palestine. The full title of the report, available for download, is The Status of Higher  Education Teaching Personnel in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza (January 2010).

“[I]t documents the growing attacks on academic freedom in the region. In particular, it highlights the role of the Israeli occupation in undermining the capacity of Palestinian academics to undertake their teaching and research. The report recommends ways that higher education unions worldwide can provide expertise and support to Palestinian and Israeli colleagues to help improve their conditions of employment and professional rights.”
