Fewer and fewer want to visit Israel

Rampages by ISIL targetting tourists badly damaged tourism in Arab North Africa. But as the only ‘white’ country/ democracy in the Middle East Israelis are upset that their country too is a violent destination because of its treatment of Palestinians. Asa Winstanley on Israel’s drop in tourism and reputation.

Christmas in Bethlehem

Bethlehem, believed to be the birth-place of Jesus Christ, traditionally has a magnificent Christmas tree in Manger Square, erected in mid-December and following the Gregorian calendar. Most Palestinian Christians follow the Greek Orthodox tradition and celebrate on January 7th. JfJfP wishes all a peaceful and steadfast season.

Tourism workers contradict ministers’ line

Over 162 Palestinians have been shot and killed by security forces since last September. Most were suspected of planning to attack Israelis. One American tourist has just been stabbed to death by a Palestinian. It’s international news. Netanyahu’s desire to prove that Israel is under constant threat from terrorists conflicts with reports from people working in Israeli tourism that terrorism is not a big deal.

Tourism to Israel drops for 2nd year

Tourist visits to Israel have fallen for the second year running. The contribution of tourism to Israel’s GDP was once over 10% but has now fallen by over third to 7.2%. The FCO doesn’t say ‘don’t go’ but does advise a state of perpetual vigilance.

Tourists shun Israel

Tourism rises and falls according to perceived pleasures and dangers. Israel is not exempt from the sense that all of the Middle East is dangerous whatever the lure of historical sites. Since OPE Israel has not been able to promote itself as a safe destination- ‘Israel is always being mentioned in the news and not in a good way’ says one hostel manager.

The crippling cost of war against Hamas

From the excitable (Al Arabiya) through the sober (FT) to denial (Globes, Israel) all report that the Israeli economy, especially its currency (the NIS) has taken a hard knock from the war against Gaza. Tourism, accounting for 7per cent of GDP has collapsed (an own goal for Israel’s insistence on the Hamas threat) and the general insecurity about Israel’s priorities have taken their toll.
