The Jewish centre cannot hold

For decades American Jews sustained a centrist position – the norm, pulling in others from right and left – based on a bipartisan closeness to power in the USA and Israel. No more. Young Jews are hostile to Trump and Netanyahu – the Orthodox are consistently illiberal in home and Israeli politics.

American-Jewish groups get serious about 2 states

Turmoil in the Israeli government, anxiety about its direction among even conservative Jewish groups plus an initiative from the Israeli Policy Forum prompt serious steps towards a 2-state solution. The alternative is no end to violence. Plus where Adelson is putting his money. Articles from JTA and Intercept.

Brain-dead politics

Israel’s Prime Minister names the Iran deal ‘a bad mistake of historic proportions’. Instead of countering this hyperbole Israel’s political leaders have all shuffled into line. Uri Avnery surveys the herd, led by men who play into every antisemitic caricature, with scorn and dismay.

Adelson in Wonderland

Mega-millionaire Sheldon Adelson thinks he can buy anything he wants. That’s true of most of the objects of his desire and what he most wants is to stamp out the threat of BDS to Israel. For this purpose he has rallied fellow billionaires to his fantasy hotel in Vegas to organise how to funnel money to students who will oppose critics of Israel.

American-Jewish right high on rape and murder fantasies

You would think, if you read multi-billionaire Sheldon Adelson’s Israel HaYom, that Israel was a frail little state teetering on the edge of extinction by the mighty armed forces of Palestine. Living in a delusional world is the kindest thing one can say from his paper’s response to the Vatican’s recognition of Palestine. More unkindly, you might see a very sick imagination. Bradley Burston thinks they’re making it up.

Bibi switches his American dependence to the wealthy far right

The old acronym for American Jews – PEP (progressive except for Palestine) is outdated. Progressive Jews have become increasingly uneasy about the direction of Israeli policy. Bibi is switching to more reliable supporters – the very wealthy and very right-wing.

Losing the argument? Buy it back

The Israeli American Council, IAC, is the new big boy on the block. Now based in Washington DC it began as the Israeli Leadership Council in LA, formed at the request of Israeli consul Ehud Danoch. It has attracted several of the US’s richest men (euphemistically renamed ‘philanthropists’) and hopes to buy its way into the dominant position in American-Israeli politics.

Very rich man wants to buy an election

sheldon adelson and miriam

Sheldon Adelson, the world’s richest Jew and 8th or 9th richest person is a man who’s got everything, including a blonde younger wife and various inherited children. But he hasn’t yet managed to buy a really big election for his chum Bibi (and his own far-right interests). Having failed to get Mitt in in 2012 he’s planning better this time – including choosing the Republicans’ candidate to ensure he or she is not one of those crazy losers.

Is your loyalty to US or Israel? Rich American Jews fund the question

This is, as Philp Weiss of Mondoweiss says, ‘astonishing’ Why would two hyper-rich American Jews want to fund a survey into where the loyalty of American Jews lay – with the US or Israel? We’ll never know as Netanyahu promptly put the kibosh on it. In fact, had the survey gone ahead, whether the answer was ‘US, Israel, both, don’t know’, it would have provided propaganda material. Though not without harm to American Jews.

Netanyahu’s billionaire buddy seeks to buy election for Newt

The race to win the Republican nomination for the presidential election has been transformed by the intervention of one man – casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson, fanatical supporter of all right-wing causes in Israel and now super-generous donor to Newt ‘Palestinians are an invented people’ Gingrich. It is Newt’s contempt for, and ignorance about, Palestinians that have attracted Adelson’s mega-bucks
