False claims by Know-Nothings

Jerry Haber of Magnes Zionist does what should all do – check the links which allegedly provide the evidence for controversial assertions. He found that an article by Jarrod Tanny in Tablet magazine attacking Jewish Voice for Peace and ‘left-wing antisemitism’ had many links not one of which supported his assertions.

New US law to silence Israel’s critics

A bipartisan bill to outlaw expressions of antisemitism which includes Israel in its definition highlights the US’s tortured relationship with Israel. Making criticism of Israel illegal is an obvious denial of free speech, a cornerstone of American democracy. Is protecting Israel more fundamental?

It’s OK to be anti-Israel

And to support BDS, which will make Israel a better place for everyone. Rebecca Vilkomerson, executive director of Jewish Voice for Peace, sees JVP’S principle task of working with others to change the US attitude to Israel. In the process, JVP has created a new model for Jewish communal life.

Oscar nominees paid to scatter stardust on Israel

ken-loach

An attempt by Israel to get up there with the movers and shakers by offering Oscar nominees free trips to Israel is wilting. Already several of the more prestigious nominees have turned down the offer on political grounds. Let’s see who takes up the freebie – or signs the petition against it (you have to be an Oscar nominee).

JVP supporters increased X 15 since 2011

Like JfJfP, America’s Jewish Voice for Peace feels part of the Jewish community even though it is exiled by the establishment. And, as their recent conference reports, the increase in the number of their supporters has outstripped AIPAC and JStreet. That is, the overwhelming issue for conscientious Jews is how Jews treat the downtrodden, viz, Palestinians. Real change.

Jewish Chanukah message: stand up to injustice

‘Every bit of this video is about a renewal of Jewish universalist tradition, about facing up to the horrors of the occupation, a willingness to be accountable and to base Jewish freedom in the freedom of others. And justice. That means not just ending the occupation, but honouring the right of return of Palestinian refugees made homeless by the establishment of the Jewish state.’ JVP’s Chanukah message.

Ending the Zionist interlude in US Judaism

Or rather, the particular form of Zionism that faithfully followed US foreign policy from the 1960s was an aberration for progressive Jews in the US argue two writers from JVP; now the young generation can’t accept that their politics makes an exception of Israel.

US activists must raise the political cost of defending the occupation

In this essay Mitchell Plitnick surveys the post-war history of US policy towards Israel and concludes the Administration’s unflinching support for Israel is more to do with its assessment of national geo-strategic interests – Israel is a reliable military partner and anti-communist bulwark – than the over-rated power of the Israel lobby.

Jewish Forward wrong to equate anti-Muslim hate speech with BDS advocacy

Mitchell Plitnick takes issue with an opinion in the Jewish Forward that Pamela Geller’s anti-Muslim hate speech (Muslims are secretly infiltrating sharia law into the US etc) is the same as speeches in favour of BDS. The principles involved are quite different.

Christians ask Congress to withhold funds from Israel if it breaks US law

A letter to Congress written by 15 leaders of Protestant denominations requesting it make military support for Israel contingent on Israeli compliance with the law has split American Jewish groups. Pro-establishment ones have pulled out of interfaith dialogue. Jewish Voice for Peace supports the Christians’ letter. JStreet complies with the establishment.

Gay rights, Israel’s new cudgel for beating Palestinians

Richard Silverstein analyses how Israel and its advocate groups are presenting the country as the only gay-friendly state in the Middle East, and notes Michael Oren’s making of myths and weird friends in Israel’s cause. An account of their political journey to its current focus on patriarchal institutions from Palestinian LGBTQ group Al Qaws.

Listen AIPAC – You do NOT speak for American Jews!

This week is the annual conference of the powerful pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC. Both Netanyahu and Obama will be present paying homage to their importance – which is entirely due to money, lobbying skills and mystique. As Jewish Voice for Peace says – and has been thwarted from saying more loudly and visibly – AIPAC does not represent American Jews. The mystique must be shattered.

Welcome for Palestinians at UN from Jewish groups

The reaction of establishment Jewish groups to the PA’s statehood request at the UN has been uniformly hostile – though not to the point of demonstrating – item 4. Jewish groups in Britain independent of the British or Israeli states are more likely to welcome the initiative. JfJfP associates itself with the statement from Independent Jewish Voices, 1. The new group Yashad, 2, also welcomes the bid. The American Jewish Voice for Peace, 4, is divided but opposes the US’s use of its veto in the Security Council

A Jewish Boat to Gaza

jfjfp

Co-ordinated by JfJfP, European, UK and US Jewish groups are uniting in another effort to demonstrate that Israel’s blockade of Gaza is ineffectual in preserving Israeli security and a blunt instrument of collective punishment on the people of Gaza. We need to raise more funds to buy, outfit and stock the ship – please consider making a donation, however small (or large).
