Palestinian women praised but restricted

Once a year, on March 8th, Palestinian women are ritually praised as steadfast. Statistics show that more girls than boys stay in secondary education but have far lower rates of employment. The PA is lacklustre in passing women-friendly laws. Women’s freedom to travel is curtailed by Israel and Palestinian conservatism. Amina Hass plus.

Women of conviction

This is a story told in pictures. Look at the faces of these brave, intelligent Israeli women all of whom have been working for peace, against the occupation for many years. International Women’s Day is too good to be confined to one day. Celebrate the quiet courage and steadfastness of women in Israel and Palestine, here and below.

Women who keep life going

This piece published by Middle East Eye to celebrate International Women’s Day focuses on the extraordinary indomitability, courage and sadness of older Palestinian women who have found small niches where they sell fruit and vegetables to keep their families alive.

Tear gas, stun grenades, pepper spray fired at Palestinian women to mark IWD

To mark women’s protest against the occupation on International Women’s Day, 1000 Palestinian women set off from Qalandia refugee camp to the checkpoint where they were to meet with Israeli Jewish and Palestinian women. They were entirely peaceful. Israeli security forces punished them with an over-the-top display of crowd control weapons. Brave men.
