What the IDF uses all those $billions for

The military aid given by the USA to Israel is massive. It doesn’t all go on super F16 fighter planes. It’s paying for a hi-tech find and drill machine and an acoustic sensor. The more expensive a new ‘security’ machine, the happier the PM. In fact, as Richard Silverstein says, the claim that the new machine detected a tunnel was a lie. It was found through a method as old as time – an informant.

The underground war

The defence departments of the USA and Israel are collaborating on making a ‘secret military weapon’ that will prevent Palestinians using the tunnels that stretch along Gaza, some of them into Israel. They are a primary source of income for those who dig, repair and transport goods along them.

IDF defeated by tunnels and resistance

Paul Rogers, professor of peace studies, writes that Israel has failed in its war aims of destroying the rockets and tunnels used by paramilitary groups in Gaza. Constructed over years in part for trade with Egypt the tunnel network is far more extensive than the IDF imagined and the fighters far better disciplined and trained, hence the comparatively high IDF death rate. The IDF withdrew not because it had ‘won’ but because better counsel prevailed.

Bedouin tribes and an open Gaza hold key to Sinai peace

2nd posting this week on a fast-moving situation. President Mursi has ordered military action and closed the Rafah crossing; Israeli aircraft hover with lethal weapons. But reports here suggest an agreement with Bedouin tribes and relaxing the Gaza siege – which has created a network of tunnels and their thriving trade in everything from fuel and food to weapons – offer the only route to law and order in the Sinai.
