EU parliament delays vote on Palestinian state

Political pressure in Europe to recognise Palestine as a state is coming from elected representatives, not governments. MPs in the UK and Spain have voted to urge their governments to turn their symbolic votes into government reality. Israel has welcomed the postponement of a vote by the EU parliament as it will give it more time to try to get more support in a vote it expects to lose. Get lobbying!

MEPs snubbed by Israel on visit to prisoners and Gaza

ofer prison

Four Members of the European Parliament visited Israel last week to look into the condition of prisoners held on administrative detention, that is, without due process of law. This followed a resolution of the EU parliament in 2013 following the death in custody of Arafat Jaradat. The resolution has been sent on to all bodies concerned with due process by states. The delegation was denied access to any prisoners and to the Israeli Ministries of Justice, the Interior and Foreign Affairs.

The line-up who will decide whether to invite Israel to join the EU market

At the beginning of next week, the European Parliament’s International Trade committee, INTA, must decide on the EU-Israel agreement on Conformity Assessment and Acceptance of Industrial Products (ACAA) which would give free access to the European single market if accepted. We post here the names of the committee members and the details of how to contact its UK members. With one exception, they are all right-wing with no particular interest in human rights or international law.

Israel’s rigged economy and the European parliament

The proposed trade agreement between the EU and Israel, known as ACCA, which centres on pharmaceuticals, is coming before the European parliament on September 18. MEPs have the power to give their assent to the new protocol, which would allow Israel free access to the EU single market, or to withhold it. JfJfP endorses the campaign to press MEPs to suspend their vote on the ACAA protocol. Get writing!

MEPs vote that all EU bodies should enforce policies on West Bank and E. Jerusalem

In early July the European parliament passed a lengthy resolution reminding all EU institutions of their legal and moral duties to enforce EU policies in relation to the oPt. It was proposed by the Greens and EFA, and supported by the Socialists’ and Democrats’ alliance. We can at least hope that this marks the energy of some MEPs on the issue. This is a useful document to keep when lobbying your MEP.

Security company’s loss of EU contract shows penalty of servicing occupation

UPDATED The security company G4S has provided security services for the EU (Commission in Brussels and Parliament) and for illegal settlements, military checkpoints and the incarceration of political prisoners in Israel. Now the European Parliament has decided to cancel their contract, a decision applauded by JfJfP which, with others, has campaigned against the role of this multinational company in securing the occupation.

Proposed EU-Israel trade deal puts EU credibility on human rights at stake

A proposed agreement between Israel and the EU on easing trade regulations (ACAA) in relation to pharmaceuticals is coming to the European Parliament next week .JfJfP is asking EU citizens to write to their MEPs urging them to oppose the agreement (see Action Alert in side bar) Here we provide briefings on this ACAA by Euromed Human Rights Network and an account of its history by the Dutch Palestine Committee.
