Signs calling for ‘one democratic state’ solution put up across Jerusalem-area town

RAMALLAH–Several signs calling for the establishment of “one democratic state in Palestine” and the abandonment of the two-state solution were found hanging on a main road in the town of Kafr Aqab, located in the central occupied West Bank Jerusalem district.

The signs read “if the choice is between one state or two, I will choose the one state,” and were hung on a road passing through the town that leads directly to the city of Ramallah.

Palestinian Authority security sources told Ma’an that they speculated the signs were hung by the One Democratic State in historic Palestine movement, which was established in May 2013.

The security sources said that the signs were put up on Wednesday evening, and expressed frustrations at the fact that Kafr Aqab was under Israeli authority and jurisdiction “which makes it hard for Palestinian security forces to remove the signs.”

A Ma’an reporter on the scene said that many locals expressed their rejection of the signs, “especially amid Netanyahu-Trump talks to abandon the two-state solution” that would prevent Palestinians from having their own independent state.

While members of the international community and establishment politicians have rested the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the discontinuation of illegal Israeli settlements and the establishment of a two-state solution, a growing number of Palestinian activists have criticized the two-state solution as unsustainable and unlikely to bring durable peace given the existing political context, proposing instead a binational state with equal rights for Israelis and Palestinians.
