PSC
October 01, 2014

Tell your MP: VOTE to recognise Palestine

So far over 15,000 of you have emailed your MPs to ask them to vote for Palestine. This is amazing but is only a small proportion of those who receive our updates – so please take action if you haven’t already.
This is important: this is the first opportunity in at least four Parliaments that MPs have had a vote to recognise Palestinians’ right to self-determination.Please make sure that you do all you can to urge your MP to vote for Palestine.

Even if your MP is not usually supportive please do take the time to send them an email, and encourage others you know to do so as well. As this is a backbench debate, MPs will not be obliged by their political parties to vote – so let’s make sure that as many as possible turn up and vote for Palestine. The future of the two state solution in Israel and Palestine

Petition created by Richard Morris

TO: ALL THOSE WHO SUPPORT THE PALESTINIAN REQUEST FOR A STATE [click headline to sign]

to write to their MPs asking them to support the motion on October 13 in Parliament being presented by Grahame Morris MP and Gerald Kaufman MP

“That this house calls on the government to recognise the State of Palestine alongside the State of Israel”

Why is this important?

The Palestinians have been brutally suppressed for over fifty years by a colonial power.

Most live below the poverty line and in Gaza children are malnourished and traumatised.

Palestinians live in a world of checkpoints, barbed wire, electrified fences and sniper towers.

MPs urged to jeject Palestinian statehood

Supporters of Israel are being urged to write to their MPs, asking them to vote against a motion for the House of Commons to recognize the state of Palestine.

The debate will be on a substantive motion: “That this House calls on the government to recognise the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel.”

Northwest Friends of Israel (NWFOI) is calling on the Jewish community to urge their elected representatives to vote No to recognising Palestine when the debate takes place on Monday 13 October.

The advocacy group is also recommending that MPs vote in favour of an amendment that says a Palestinian state should only happen “on the conclusion of successful peace negotiations between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority.”

“Recognising Palestine now, with no formal peace treaty in place with Israel and no binding agreements, is effectively recognising Hamas,” stated NWFOI co-chair Raphi Bloom.

“Additionally the Palestinian Authority repeatedly refuses to recognize Israel as a Jewish state and neighbouring Arab countries have failed to fulfil UN resolution 242 which calls for the exchange of land in return for peace and security.”

Mr Bloom added: “A just settlement which results in a secure Israel recognised by all countries in the Middle East living in peace alongside a viable, Palestinian state should be the aim of the British Parliament, not supporting a unilateral declaration of statehood.”

Commentators believe that a Yes vote would put pressure on the current or next UK government to recognise Palestine. However, a No vote might deter a future Labour administration from trying to secure European Union support for active steps towards a two-state solution.
