EU thinks of bypassing Donald Trump’s poisonous “plan” for I/P

The European Commission is considering proposing a plan to kick start Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. It would be a small but significant step towards Palestinian rights. An Israel spokesman has, unsurprisingly, ruled out working with the EU.

The European Commission’s intention is to bypass Donald Trump’s “plan” for solving the Israeli/Palestinian conflict (see our Lobbying report in Campaigns). The crux of the EU plan, as so far understood, is to transfer some Palestinian areas in East Jerusalem to Area B under Palestinian civil jurisdiction, and to create an international development area in East Jerusalem. An Israeli spokesman has ruled out any role for the EU, no doubt because agreeing to the plan would imply acceptance that East Jerusalem does not belong to Israel.
