Passover has lost its meaning

Zionism set out to create a modern redemption of the Jewish People but has steadily destroyed the integrity of our Passover remembrance. Celebrating this festival of liberation is communal hypocrisy writes Robert Cohen.

Welcome the Wicked Child this Passover

Passover celebrates the liberation of the Jews from a life of slavery. Robert Cohen looks at the story of the Four Sons told at the seder. He thinks the Wicked Son asks the question which best places us in the here and now, not as a people needing liberation but people whose most pressing question is ‘why can the people we hold in subjection not be freed?’

Tell old Israel to let Palestinian people go!

What a tragic irony that the songs many Americans used to sing at seder – Go Down Moses – as a recall of the time Jews were hold as slaves by Egypt’s Pharoah has now been reclaimed by young American Jews as a demand that the Palestinian people must be let go free. Passover this year is April 4-11.

Passing over a celebration of freedom to the bitter trap of victimhood

Passover this year is sundown April 14 – sundown April 22. Its origin is a celebration of God’s help in freeing Jews from Egyptian slavery – a founding myth of Judaism and of Jews as being ‘chosen’. Robert Cohen questions the Jewish attachment to a myth of powerlessness while exercising considerable power over Palestinians. JfJfP adds “Pesach is about liberation, both physical liberation and mental liberation, including from outdated ideas and ways of thinking. It is also not possible to be free while other people are enslaved.”
