Hey presto! Palestinians disappear

Cornerstone of apartheid, magical thinking, annexing the West Bank by stealth: presented, oddly, as a bill to confirm Israel’s Jewish identity (it’s in doubt?) the ‘nation-state’ bill has more to do with annihilating the Palestinian political presence than a Jewish crisis of identity. Jonathan Cook’s judgment,

Only Jews will have right to self-determination

jerusalem-day-2014-reuters

And the ‘self’ in that right will never be Palestinian, The nation-state bill makes explicit that Palestinians are not regarded as a national self and they no have right whatsoever to shape their own destiny. Critique by Adalah senior lawyer.

Bill confirms Jews’ roots in Israel

The nation-state bill got a rowdy reception at its first Knesset hearing reports Ynet. Joint List and Meretz both opposed this most divisive law. Why do you need it? asked MK Ganaim. Balad MKs were escorted out having failed the PM’s test of their Zionism.

Purpose of Basic Law is to defend the character of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people

There is a clause on the nation-state bill that ‘Every citizen of Israel, regardless of their religion or nationality, has the right to actively preserve their culture, heritage, language and identity’. All else, from ‘purpose’ to national anthem of the state are exclusively Jewish.

Arabic not spoken here

Israel’s leaders are either neurotically insecure to need a nation-state bill or, Haaretz explanation, they need another bit of law to make bashing the Palestinians seem legitimate. Dropping Arabic as 1 of the 2 official languages is an insulting act.
