American presidents? They’re all the same.

An opinion poll just carried out amongst Palestinians shows the usual Palestinian/Israeli gulf. The gut Palestinian feeling that American presidents are all the same may be true – the settlements continue. The fact that they attribute this to ‘the Jewish lobby’ is a problem. What of the military industrial complex, US strategic interests in the MidEast, the cheerleading for Israel role of right-wing Christians. Jews may be pre-eminent in some areas, finance or media ownership, but most American capital is owned and controlled by white Americans of Christian heritage.

Truman opposed creation of ‘a Jewish state’

The support of the United States, under the leadership of President Truman, for the creation of Israel is often cited as the decisive factor in what was a very contentious issue. What is less well-known is that Truman was adamantly opposed to the creation of ‘a Jewish state’ as being fundamentally unAmerican. He also complained about the intensive lobbying by Jewish organisations he was subject to – but, as author John Judis says – the lobbying was successful and set a precedent that has continued ever since.

When Jewish power became right-wing power

Where is AIPAC when Netanyahu needs it? Not backing him in the peace talks says Roi Bachmutsky. He raises the question of how AIPAC became so powerful in US politics – which involves a trip to the past when JJ Goldberg noted that Jewish power is not constant but is greatest under right-wing presidents – which explains a lot, but not, as he also notes, the weird mismatch between the actual material and political security of US Jews and their self-image as weak and at constant risk.

Oakland museum caves in to Jewish lobby to block Gazan kids’ art from view

Racheli Gai of JPN writes ‘this article puts the cancellation of an art exhibit in the context of growing efforts to silence efforts to bring to light artistic expression by Palestinians. Below the article is an open letter to the Oakland Children’s museum, which you can sign if you feel so inclined.’
