Medical care withheld from Palestinian prisoners

חסן תוראבי

‘The Israeli Prison Service has adopted a systematic policy of medical negligence in prisons and detention centres housing Palestinian detainees. Long delays in providing substandard medical treatment are typical’ says Addameer. Who cares? Most Palestinians, for whom the fate of their arrested countrymen is a dramatic issue, and a few NGOs. This campaign hopes others do, and will act.

Hunger strike wins again

Israeli authorities, reportedy including PM Netanyahu, Shin Bet and the prison service, have struck a deal with the lawyers of the gravely ill Samer Issawi, who has been on hunger strike since August 1. The deal renews the potency of the hunger strike, not least because of the symbolic and potent role that political prisoners have amongst Palestinians.

British medical journal takes up issue of Israeli doctors and torture

The Israeli Medical Association denies the charges but says responsibility for prisoners’ health should be removed from the Israeli Prison Service.
