Trump rides on unspoken Republican racism

The Republican elite in the US despise the vulgar, racist Pres. Trump. Actually, he is saying and doing much that they want but can’t be seen to support. The anti-racist convention that has held the USA together is broken.

White supremacy is our country’s original sin

The headline phrase is from Rabbi Sharon Brous. The moment for comments on Charlottesville may be passed but Pres. Trump’s embrace of white supremacists has, as predicted, forced people to take a side. Rabbi Brous writes for Jewish Journal, usually pro-Israel and Hadley Freeman, who has before spoken against Israel’s critics, cannot defend a country which puts brown-nosing Trump before taking a stand against neo-Nazis.

To our fellow Jews: which side are you on?

For many Americans Donald Trump’s speech about violence at Charlottesville was THE defining moment. No longer could anyone claim not-to-know of his affinity with white nationalists. Jews, 70% of whom voted Democrat/Clinton, have to choose whether to work with him or against him say Chabon and Waldman.

The Establishment’s Outsider Group

The largest Jewish minorities in the West used to be stalwarts of the Left but since the 1970s have become increasingly right-wing. Despite this absorption into the Establishment such Jews have not discarded their heritage of persecution. Emma Green of The Atlantic on the dissonant identities of American Jews.

FACTS, says Trump, are what I want. He doesn’t like the ones he’s seen

The POTUS waits for facts when all media channels are showing factual video of white men, decked out in mystic and military regalia bullying the protesters at the Unite the Right rally . It’s a fact that neo-Nazi Richard Spencer said Jews would understand him because they wanted to do for Jews what he wanted to do for white people. Well not those fake facts – real ones like the ‘alt-Left’ stopping the return of the USA to its status as the greatest country in the world.

Orthodox Jews in the US stay silent on white supremacy

The Council on American-Islamic Relations managed it, so too did most Christian and reform Jewish bodies; even Mrs May had a go. Orthodox Jewry remained silent on Unite the Right jamboree seeming to think if Jews are not the victims it’s not worth bothering about.

Open space for white supremacists

America’s far right is ebullient. It’s getting more media coverage than it has in years. The lack of BAME persons in the counter-protests suggests it might be succeeding in its aim of terrorising black, brown, Muslim people. And the Forward’s Nathan Guttman finds out it is anti-semitic as part of its overall racism.
