NYT caves in to Israeli pressure

There is hypocrisy and dissemblance in the decision of the NYT to recant for publishing an article by Marwan Barghouti without saying he was in prison on ‘five counts of murder and membership in a terrorist organization’. Barghouti has not been accused of murdering anyone though he may have been complicit in the violence of the 2nd intifada. The NYT has unapologetically published articles by known Israeli killers.

‘There’s a mindset in which we are blind to the existence of Palestinians as human beings’

Sitting in the home of a Jewish rabbi – whose comment makes our headline – Abu Awwad speaks to other settlers about how he turned from a firebrand very angry man, whose brother had been shot dead for no reason and mother beaten up by Shin Bet, into someone whose mission is to get others to understand that the pain of sudden bereavement knows no boundaries.

Mass support for peace has evaporated

Still in 1999 there was a vigorous peace camp in Israel. Since the 2nd intifada it has diminished to a dedicated, and unpopular, core abandoned by the centre ground for various reasons including the belief that Hamas does not want peace. Despite David Grossman’s pleas, says Mazal Mualem, the middle ground is set against Hamas, and peace.

Resisting the war against memory

Hannah Arendt and Primo Levi are amongst the great thinkers to pinpoint the centrality of historical truth to honest politics. Here we post a report on memories of the Nakba by Israelis who perpetrated it and 2nd, news of rallies held by Palestinians to commemorate the killing of 13 Israeli Palestinians by the IDF in 2000 during the Second (more violent) Intifada and their demand for accountability.
