Israeli soldier named ‘Terminator’ after shooting dead 3 Palestinians

BETHLEHEM — An Israeli soldier on Thursday was celebrated in an American Jewish weekly as “the Terminator” after he shot and killed three Palestinians in nine days.

The Jewish Press ran an article on the soldier, known only as “Corporal T”, under the headline “Meet the Terminator,” referring to the cyborg of the Hollywood film franchise.

The soldier shot and killed 25-year-old Malik Talal al-Shareef after an alleged stabbing attempt on an Israeli soldier in the Gush Etzion settlement bloc near Bethlehem on Thursday.
Nine days earlier, on Oct. 17, Israeli reports say he killed another two Palestinians in the same illegal settlement bloc.Shadi Nabil Abd al-Muti Dweik, 22, and Shabaan Abu Shkeidem, 17, were shot dead in the area after an Israeli soldier was stabbed and injured.

“Corporal T,” who has reportedly spent just two months in operational duty, was described by his fellow officers as a “young warrior,” according to The Jewish Press.

“Kfir Brigade officers commended the rapid response and cool temper of the warrior, who prevented more serious results,” their report said.

“According to them, the fact that he is a young warrior, who’s only been in uniform a total of eight months, only two of those in operational duty, did not affect his focused and precise actions in both cases.”

Israeli news site Ynet also praised the soldier’s actions, citing his “alert and accurate response” during the incidents as “impressive.”

Mutaz Atallah Qassem, 22, was shot dead on October 21st after allegedly attacking a soldier and a settler and inflicting minor injuries.

The celebration of the 19-year-old soldier’s actions comes after a deadly month in the occupied Palestinian territory that left at least 69 Palestinians dead.

The majority were shot and killed by Israeli forces after allegedly attempting attacks on Israelis, although Palestinians and rights groups have raised questions over Israel’s version of events in a number of cases.

There has been widespread criticism of Israel’s “shoot to kill” policy advocated by Israeli officials. Israeli rights group B’Tselem said last month that the policy has led to high numbers of unnecessary deaths.

Last month UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon said that “a number of incidents, many caught on video and widely disseminated, call into question the degree of response, including the apparent disproportionate use of lethal force as a first resort.”

Meet the Terminator: IDF Soldier Killed 3 Terrorists in 2 Weeks

Cpl. T, who serves in the Shimshon Battalion of the Kfir Brigade, on Thursday night eliminated an Arab terrorist who tried to stab soldiers in Gush Etzion. “He deliberately pulled out a knife to stab a friend who was with me. At that moment I cocked the gun and shot him,” T said. Last week, he killed two terrorists during a similar attack. In that attack, an IDF soldier was injured lightly to moderately.

“While securing the Gush intersection, we noticed the suspect,” Cpl. T described the Thursday night event in Gush Etzion. The terrorist, Malk a-Sharif from Hebron, reached the Gush Etzion junction and turned toward the bus stop going to Alon Shvut. “We called at him to cross the road over to us and when he got to us he pulled out a knife with the intent to stab the friend who was with me. At that moment I cocked the gun and I shot him.”

Kfir Brigade officers commended the rapid response and cool temper of the warrior, who prevented more serious results. According to them, the fact that he is a young warrior, who’s only been in uniform a total of eight months, only two of those in operational duty, did not affect his focused and precise actions in both cases. The Shimshon Battalion to which he belongs has been dealing over the past month with many of the attacks in the Etzion area, north of Hebron.

The Kfir (Lion Cub) Brigade, a.k.a. the 900 Brigade, is the youngest infantry brigade of the IDF, established in late 2005 as part of the 162nd Division of the Central Regional Command.

A soldier who foiled an attempted terror attack at a Gush Etzion hitchhiking station on Thursday evening had also stopped two terrorists during an attempted attack about a week ago. He shot three terrorists attempting to kill Israelis within nine days.

Corporal T’, 19, began his service in March 2015, and already won praise from his officers for his coolheaded and speedy response to a previous incident last week, during which he shot and killed two terrorists.

According to the officers, his alert and accurate response during the incidents was even more impressive given the fact that he is a “regular”, young soldier who has only been serving in the IDF for eight months – with only less than two months of operational activity.

The Shimshon Battalion* to which the soldier belongs has been over the past month facing a large portion of the terror attacks north of Hebron.

“As we guarded the junction, we noticed the suspect, told him to cross the road to us and when he reached us he pulled out a knife with the intention of stabbing the friend who was with me,” the soldier recalled in a conversation with ynet. “At that moment I cocked my weapon and shot him. During another stabbing attempt a week ago, I shot two terrorists in order to remove the threat.”

* The Shimshon battalion is part of the Kfir infantry brigade which  “is a major component in maintaining Israel’s security, as it specializes in anti-terror fighting and combat within dense, urban areas. Kfir soldiers stand at the forefront of a determined fight against terrorism and share the burden of intense fighting. Kfir battalions are deployed in every major Palestinian city, from Hebron in the south to Tulkarem and Jenin in the north”. Jewish Virtual Library
